you want to build a dog kennel that is a perfect square. What will the side
lengths be?

your group for 2 minutes. What does each
word mean and how can we evaluate it?

Side length = 5 ft.
Perimeter = 20 ft.
Area = 25 ft²
Perfect square = Yes!!
Squares and Square Roots
• Square Root: A number that produces a
specified quantity when multiplied by itself.
Example: 8² = 64
Why doesn’t 8² = 16? Discuss with your group
for one minute.
Exponents
What is an exponent?
• A quantity (or number) representing the power to
which a given number is to be raised.
What are some examples of exponents?
 2² = 4
 3² = 9
 4² = ?
 5² = ?
 6² = 36
 2³ = 8
 3³ = ?
 4³ = 64
 5³ = ?
 6³ = 216
