War on Two Fronts
While
the Battle of Britain was going on so
were battles in the Mediterranean and
Northern Africa.
War on Two Fronts
 The
immediate goals of the Italians were to
capture oil-rich Middle East and the Suez Canal.
 They also invaded Greece to secure invasion of
Egypt.
War on Two Fronts
Germans
and Italians forced the British out
of Greece.
Luftwaffe launched attack on Crete, Greece

War on Two Fronts
The
Luftwaffe now launched from Crete to
support German troops in North Africa
Germany occupied all of south and

War on Two Fronts
The
Germans also blockaded the British Isles
through a combined submarine and Luftwaffe
effort.
The Russian Front
Hitler

Germany
used over
3,300 aircraft out of
its inventory of 5,900.
Deployed
almost 60%
of Luftwaffe but
suffered heavy
losses.
The Russian Front
Russia
was the only
country to use
women to fly combat
sorties. (over 30,000)
Marina Raskova
They
had three
regiments of women
fliers who flew
fighters and bombers
(all women) but also
flew in male
squadrons.
The Russian Front
Lilya
Litvyak “White
Rose of Stalingrad”
was top woman ace
who took down 12
German planes.
At
age 22, she was
shot down & received
Soviet Union’s

threw everything they
had at the Germans
and stopped their
advance.
Multiple Fronts Spread Them Thin
Germany
was
spread too thin,
with battles in
Britain, Eastern
Europe, the

Africa.
Multiple Fronts Spread Them Thin
 Hitler
backed off Britain
to concentrate on
Russia, but the Russia
front was settling into a
long land struggle.
 Hitler promised
Luftwaffe air offensive
of Britain would resume.
Multiple Fronts Spread Them Thin
Germany
was
still powerful
but was bound
to lose when it
was committed
