What are California’s non-renewable
energy sources?
 Petroleum
◦ Oil
◦ Natural Gas
Non-Renewable Energy Resources
(Oil)




About 15% of oil produced in the US comes
from California
Oil is created when tiny marine organisms die
and become buried by sediment on the ocean
floor. The organic matter undergoes chemical
and physical changes over millions of years to
become oil.
Over time, oil migrates into porous source
rocks, or reservoir rocks.
The first commercial oil production occurred
in 1876.


Usually forms along with oil
Less dense, so it rises to the top of the
reservoir.
In 2003 California produced 350 billion cubic
feet of natural gas
Used for heating and cooking, and to generate
electricity
