FIRST Collaboration Meeting (GSI)
16-17/12/2009
Present Status (1) - Nowadays in cave B and C ...
Cave B

purification system
Cave C
ALADIN magnet and TOF wall
… and LAND detector
R.Pleskac
FIRST Collaboration Meeting (GSI)
16-17/12/2009
Present Status (2) – Cave B
Situation in cave B
FOPI (in the front part)
FOPI TOF wall (Phase I) moved sideward
(behind the FOPI there are 5 + 12.4 meters of
space)
TP-MUSIC IV (in the rear part, on brown steel
and lead shielding bricks, presently open)
LAND cover (higher than MUSIC, lead
shielding bricks or adjustable rolls)
Gas purification system (for TP-MUSIC IV)
Cave partially closed
Availability of cave (in 2010 and 2011)
2010 – FOPI experiments (Y.Leifels, for the
planning, see GSI website)
e.g in April 2010 7Li beam, always high
energies 1 – 2 GeV/u, starting first with lower
intensity, later on measuring with high
intensity around 10e8)
R.Pleskac
2010 – SIS100 test experiments (behind
FOPI, they need ~ 4 m for their vacuum
chamber)
Conclusions/Notes
Cave B will survive until the end of 2011, for
sure (there was a danger that cave A and B
will be totally dismounted already during 2010
because of tests of FAIR magnets)
We can stay with TP-MUSIC IV and TOF in
cave during whole 2010
Behind FOPI there is enough space both for
SIS100 tests and FIRST
No other users not known at the moment
FIRST Collaboration Meeting (GSI)
16-17/12/2009
Present Status (2) – Cave C
Situation in cave C
Hyphi setup (several detectors in front and
behind ALADIN)
ALADIN (vacuum chamber dismounted in the
rear part)
Rails for TP-MUSIC IV and TOF dismounted
(also in the rear part)
TOF wall (in the air standing on the floor
behind the ALADIN) and its electronics
Built in an additional beam dump (last part in
the cave)
LAND (placed in the rear part)
Cave is closed
Additional concrete blocks just in front of the
cave opening (from HADES beam line)
Availability of cave (in 2010 and 2011)
First half of 2010 – preparation of LAND
experiments (new LAND readout electronics)
Summer 2010 – LAND experiments
Autumn 2010 – eventually second set of
LAND experiments (in this case they would
need TP-MUSIC vacuum chamber!!!)
Conclusions/Notes
All potential users will meet and discuss how
to be planned not to disturb each other too
much (date not known yet)
It could be that there is one more Hyphi
experiment in cave C (spring 2010)
No other users known at the moment
(generally speaking there is a big interest for
this cave)

FIRST Collaboration Meeting (GSI)
16-17/12/2009
Present Status (3) – TP-MUSIC & TOF
TP-MUSIC IV checkup (what was done
until today)
Activities started at the beginning of October
Crane in the rear part of cave repaired
Defect pre-pump in turbo pump set (whole set
replaced)
Root and turbo pumps mounted on (prepump, main pump, control and cooling units)
TP-MUSIC IV closed by LAND cover (LAND
cover closed by a big flange and cleaned)
Vacuum pumped (10e-4 torr, leaks not
investigated, altogether 3 – 4 weeks, work of
W.Quick and G.Ickert)
Chamber opened again
Cabling checked and completed (2 engineers
from Saclay already 3 times at GSI, some
small reparations also performed)
Preamps for PC’s tested (but we do not
understand everything)
R.Pleskac
Status of TOF wall
Hyphi used only front scintillator plane
(cassettes and/or individual rods and/or
individual photo tubes reorganized to get one
fully working plane)
They claimed a small detector efficiency (it
has to be carefully checked !)
Conclusions/Notes
We should get status report from Hyphi group
soon (Jan 2010?)
We have enough HV and booster channels
We have almost all electronics (1 – 2 Fastbus
TDC have to be given back, we can get them
from LAND after its upgrade)
We have to strongly think about complete
checkup of this detector
Y.Leifels and W.Trautmann would like to use
TOF in their setup with Chimera and they are
open to eventual upgrade of PMs
FIRST Collaboration Meeting (GSI)
16-17/12/2009
Present Status (3) – Target chamber
Status of target chamber
Standing in the experimental hall (in the
corridor between cave B and C)
Chamber is placed on rails (blue support on
brown platform)
Chamber is opened
Big rear flange in cave C
Valves and vacuum pumps are there
Common control unit for pre-pump and main
pump defect (we have to look for another
pumping set)
R.Pleskac

Coming up (1) – Mechanics & MUSIC Checkup
Mechanical works – Setup
Open cave C (after Jan 8, Hyphi or LAND)
Open cave B (not fully closed)
Move rails and TOF to cave B
Build new mechanical support in cave B for
the TP-MUSIC and TOF (the last part of the
cave, assuring standard working conditions)
Build an additional beam dump (in front of the
MUSIC, Mr. Radon)
Mount steel barriers on the top of TP-MUSIC
IV and TOF (safety reasons)
Clean a bit on the top of TP-MUSIC IV
chamber
Mount (vertically adjustable) rolls on the
LAND cover (already done !)
First version of technical drawings for our
experiment (2D situation in cave, insert target
chamber)
R.Pleskac
TP-MUSIC IV checkup (what should be
done very soon)
Search for documentation (logbooks, private
communications)
Finish test of IC preamps (ongoing activity)
Mount and test HV (February and/or March)
Clean the chamber
Close TP-MUSIC IV and pump the vacuum
again
Insert P10 directly from a bottle and see
alpha signals with scope

FIRST Collaboration Meeting (GSI)
16-17/12/2009
Important Topics
DAQ electronics
We have no concept
We have no person in charge for this topic
Physics program
We have got 33 shifts (it is not enough to perform whole hadron therapy part as it was
proposed for G-PAC)
We have to set preferences (what are reactions of our biggest interest)
4He option is very interesting
Simulations/Models
Know about expected production rates
To use 1 or 2 scintillator planes
Acceptance for Z particles (strength of mg-field, additional detectors in target reaction)
