Harmonic accompaniment
♫ Using the chords of C major and D minor, create a harmonic
accompaniment for What shall we do with a drunken sailor. ♫
Here are some suggestions:
Alternate the bass note
with off-beat chords.
Hold each chord for a full bar.
Make a pattern using the
individual notes in the chords.
♫ Try them out with the melody and decide which
one is most appropriate for the style of the song. ♫

Improvising a bass line
The notes you will need for the bass part are the tonic (the
first note of the scale) and the dominant (the fifth note of
the scale) of
each chord.
D minor has a tonic of D
and a dominant of A.
C major has a tonic of C
and a dominant of G.
♫ Take turns to improvise a bass line (make
one up as you play) using these notes, while
the rest of the class sings the song. ♫

Composing a descant
A descant (sometimes also known as a countermelody)
is a tune which ‘decorates’ or
supplements the main melody.
♫ Listen to this example of a
descant for What shall we do
with a drunken sailor. ♫
♫ Now compose your own descant. ♫
Tip: if you use notes that belong to the triad
in each bar, your descant will definitely fit!

Composing an introduction
What shall we do with a drunken sailor begins with two
