TAKE OUT JOURNALS!
• AGENDA:
– Bellwork:
– Classwork: African
literature, music and
dance (read the
prologue and first
movement for this)
Notes: African Literature, music and
dance (write this down on page 33)
• Dance and music are an integral part of African story
telling.
• Music and dance were aesthetic but also functional
– played an important role in many life ceremonies and
rituals
• With no written literature or record, tales were told
via music and song. (Oral culture/orature)
– Information and stories were transmitted by word of
mouth.
• As a result, the idea of “listening” as an important
skill is emphasized.
Assignment – Music and Dance (under
bellwork, page 32)
• In your groups:
– Go through the prologue and first movement and
identify instances in which music or dance occurs.
• Give page number and paraphrase what is happening.
– Once you identify the music/dance, decide what role
it plays in the play at this moment.
– Why would the author decide to include it here? What
function does it serve?
– Lastly, compare and contrast at least two instances of
music and dance that you have found. What can we
learn by looking at them together and seeing them so
early in the play?
