Muscle Facts
 Muscles are tissues that can shorten along
their length
 Muscles only move things when they
contract or shorten
 There are more than 600 muscles in the
muscular system
Muscular System
 The Muscular System works
with the Skeletal System to
provide movement.
 The Muscular System works
within internal organs to
support bodily functions
2 Muscle Categories
Voluntary Muscles
Involuntary Muscles
Skeletal
Smooth
Cardiac
Voluntary Muscles
 Muscles that are under conscious
control
Examples:
 Muscles that move joints (biceps
and triceps)
 Muscles that move skin (smiling,
raising your eyebrows)
Voluntary Muscles
Voluntary Muscle -
Involuntary Muscles
 Muscles NOT under conscious control
 Examples: heart, digestive organs,
diaphragm (breathing)

3 Types of Muscle Tissue
1. Skeletal Muscle
2. Smooth Muscle
3. Cardiac Muscle
3 Types of Muscle Tissue
Skeletal Muscle
P 489
Muscle attached to the
skeleton, making
movement possible

Involuntary muscle found
inside many internal
organs of the body

Muscle tissue found
only in the heart

Injury
Care of Skeletal & Muscular System
Explain how exercise improves
muscular strength and flexibility.
1. Individual cells grow wider,
muscle becomes thicker
2. Exercise & stretching
lengthens muscles which
increases flexibility
