The Muscular System
EQ: How does the
muscular system work
to move your body?
Previously, in life science…
• You learned about the skeletal system.
Now, you will find out how bones and
muscles work together to provide a
framework for movements.
How do Muscles
Work:
Number of squeezes
first minute:
Number of squeezes
second minute:
1. What is the function of the
muscular system?
• To contract to allow movement.
2. What are involuntary
muscles?
• Muscles NOT under your control
• Ex: heart and stomach
3. What are voluntary muscles?
• Muscles that ARE under your control
ex: arm & leg muscles
4. What are the three types of
muscle?
a. Skeletal muscle
Voluntary
b. Smooth muscle
c. Cardiac muscle
Involuntary
• Which type of muscle is found only
in the heart?
Cardiac muscle!
5. What is skeletal muscle?
• attached to skeletal system and allows you
to move.
6. How are muscles attached to
bone?
• By tendons
Get a Grip
Observations:
Are the skeletal
muscles in your hand
at work when you
hold your hand still?
7. Explain how skeletal muscles
work in pairs?
• Muscle cells can only move
bones by contracting.
• They must work in pairs –
one contracts and the other
returns to original length
• Antagonist pairs!
• What happens to each muscle to
straighten the arm?
The triceps contracts and the
biceps relaxes!

3. What are voluntary muscles?
