Some Observations About
Voice
Mirroring the author’s
tone/voice…
 This does not mean that you merely
parrot what the author says, or point out
her rhetorical devices. This means that
you actually take on the tone (sarcastic,
hyper-alert, humorous, depressed, etc)
of the author.
Mirroring the author’s
tone/voice…
 This would not be mirroring the author’s
tone:
 “Stravinsky argues that conductors rely on
their charismatic ways and ability to
seduce a crowd is similar to an actor or a
politician.”
 Note that this sentence does not have the
sarcasm or the metaphorical language of
Stravinsky’s piece.
Mirroring the author’s
tone/voice…
 This would be more like it:
 Stravinsky applies metaphors as often as
notes on music, relating conductors to the
“well-respected” and “liked” occupations of
politicians and actors. Seemingly, the three
jobs are interchangeable, as all one needs
is an ego and shoddy skills.
 Note the use of metaphor and sarcasm in
this sentence.
Taking on the language of the
piece.
 For those of you who used music references,
it seemed to really work. Work in this area
and don’t be afraid to sprinkle this technique
(taking on the language of the piece)
throughout.
 “…and the buffoons with batons must be
made to stay within the boundaries of the 4/4
time they are instructed to conduct.”
 “Stravinsky conducts his piece to attack the
conductor’s ego and knock them off their
pedestals and make them mere mortals.”
Taking on the language of the
piece.
 What about this one?
 “Music illiterate conductors have
transformed the euphonious concerts of
the past into a politically diseased show
littered with misleading gestures and overthe-top expression.”

piece
 What other words/phrases might you use to
take on the language of this piece?
 The overture of Stravinsky's piece…
 The crescendo…

Voice
 “Stravinsky likens conductors to actors
and politicians--the Paris Hiltons and
Arnold Schwarzeneggers of the world-who know little about what they are
doing, but know a lot about
themselves.”
Voice
 “In his writing, composed carefully like
an orchestra, Stravinsky employs
loaded diction, metaphorical language
and first-hand knowledge of the
conducting world to drive the “leader” of
the orchestra into the pits, where
Stravinsky believes they belong.”

them to achieve that 7!)
