Palpation means feeling a body part through
the patients skin
3.What is ultrasound imaging?.

Ultrasound uses high frequency waves to
produce echoes from different tissues. A
transducer picks up the echoes and via a
computer converts them into an image
4. What is an x ray?

An x ray uses electromagnetic radiation.
They have an extremely short wave length
which enables them to penetrate some
materials such as the soft tissue of a persons
body. The image which is produced on
photographic paper shows bones as white
and soft tissue as dark this is because they
are denser
5. Why is it better to use ultrasound
than x ray on fetuses?

X rays produce radiation, which could
possibly harm the baby or the woman’s
reproductive organs. Ultrasound is
considered harmless.
6. What are the disadvantages of
ultrasound (2)

Creates a fuzzy image

2 dimensional image
7. What are the broad principles of
endoscopic surgery?




Done using small instruments
Light and camera attached so surgeon can
visualise on a screen.
Can use existing orifice
Would only need small incision if not

9. What is the difference between


Elective surgery is one recommended by a
surgeon and for which is usually a waiting list

Emergency surgery is performed without
delay in order to save the patient or prevent
worsening

.
14. Where would a topical drug be
placed?

Skin
15. What is an MRI
scan?

A magnetic resonance imaging scan, it takes
place in a horizontal cylinder equipped with
powerful magnets.
16. Why might we obtain a tissue
biopsy?

It enables a small sample of living tissue to
be removed and examined usually under a
microscope.
17. Which 3 fluids are often tested?

18. An ECG examines the electrical
impulses of which organ?

Heart
19. What substance is commonly used
for a contrast x ray of the digestive
system and why?

Barium sulphate as it is radio opaque and
harmless
20. What are the main purposes of
taking a patients history?



Ascertain the disease process
Identify which agents are at play
