The Blues are a style of music that originated in the African American Communities
As Africans were brought to this country and forced into slavery, they brought with them
their culture and style of music. The blues reflect the hardships and difficulties
of slavery and the life they now were forced to lead.
In the 1900s, the Blues had developed into a standard musical form and they
continued to develop further into the 1930s.
The blues began to divide into two different sounds:
the country or rural blues and the city or urban blues.
With the development of the electric guitar in the
late 1940s/early 1950s, a newer style of blues was
being heard and even played on the radio.
Eventually, this style grew further and began to
branch off into a new sound, one called

Rock ‘n’ Roll was developed during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The term
Rock ‘n’ Roll came from a combination of the rockabilly and blues music.
Rock ‘n’ Roll’s development was also enhanced by the technological changes in music
such as the amplifier, electric guitar, and microphone.
The first officially recognized Rock ‘n’ Roll song was the tune
” Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley and his Comets in 1954.
But in 1951 it was Cleveland disc jockey Alan Freed
who first coined the phrase “Rock ‘n’ Roll” while
playing the rhythm and blues records of many great
performers.
Alan Freed first began his career in Akron
and then moved to Cleveland before finally
working in New York for the larger radio
stations.
Alan Freed was also one of the first to promote concerts and dances
featuring the music he was playing on the radio.
