Dividend – Number being divided
Divisor – Number that we are dividing by
Quotient – Answer to the division exercise
“Dividend” divided by “Divisor” equals “Quotient”
When division does not come out evenly,
quotient is not a whole number
– The answer will be a partial quotient and a
remainder (R)
Dividing Whole Numbers
• Division interpreted in two ways
– “Repeated subtraction” version
– “Missing factor” version
• Missing factor version leads to method for
checking division
• Long Division
• Division by zero is not defined. The
operation cannot be performed
• Short Division
The Wrong Way
Don’t Do This!
Getting Ready for Algebra
Section 1.4
Objective
• Solve an equation of the form
x
b
ax = b, or
a
where x, a and b are whole numbers
Getting Ready For Algebra
• Multiplication and division are also inverse
operations
• To solve an equation using multiplication
or division
– Divide both sides by the same number to
isolate variable, or
– Multiply both sides by the same number
– Check solution by substituting it for variable in
original equation
