Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century
Rachel O’ Connor
Ramsgrange Community School
What is TL21?
• A Professional Development Programme run in
4 Ed. Centres in conjunction with NUI
Maynooth
• CPD opportunity not based on in-service but
access to a developmental process over 2
academic years
• Facilitated and co-ordinated by Tommy
Lannigan
• An Action Research based project with
University Accreditation options
Why did RCS take part?
• Opportunity for an interested group of Teachers
to form a working group (with ongoing outside
supports in the form of linked workshops)
• Opportunity to identify learning goals and
placing them in the wider school context
• Opportunity to promote new initiatives in RCS
• Opportunity to exchange & share feedback and
ideas with 3 other schools
• An ‘umbrella’ initiative that covers a multitude!
The Multitude……….to name but a few!
• School Self-Evaluation
▫ Literacy Initiatives
▫ Numeracy Initiative
▫ School Improvement Plan
• The National Strategy to improve Literacy and
Numeracy 2011-2020.
• School Development Planning
• The Inspectorate – Whole-School/ Subject/Dept
• New Junior Cycle
How are we using TL21?
• We choose a topic that addresses many of the
initiatives already mentioned
• We have been engaging in a project called
▫ ‘Improving Literacy in Project Maths’
• A robust Action Research Project involving 2 out
of 3 First Year Maths Classes
• Numeracy targets set in 2012/13 are being
addressed
• Literacy is being addressed
• Whole-school SSE taking place
Action Research
Identify an issue or challenge

Stage
2
Plan a change
What does it look like?
• Identify issue/ challenge
• Collection and analysis of baseline data
▫ Quantitative: Entrance Assessments, CAT3,
WRAT4 & NGRT, Christmas Test (specific
questions set)
▫ Qualitative: Student and Parent attitudinal survey,
Student engagement survey
• Workshops*****
• Evaluate progress made
• Reflect on process
Current Stage: Workshop 3
• Principal & Deputy Principal
• Working with 25 project maths keywords as
identified by Maths Dept.
• 5 workshops with 2 classes over 5 weeks
• Progress and feedback given to Maths Teachers
each week.
Word
Workshop
• Based on ‘Think, Pair, Share’
group work model
• Each Student has a different
role e.g. Reporter, Recorder
etc.
• Emphasis on Group work and
Active Participation
• Different activities each week
• Progression and harder tasks
each week
