Lesson 1
The Land
Between Two
Rivers
Plains and Plateaus
• Plains are low, flat areas. Most of the cities of
Mesopotamia were in the plain in the southeast.
• Plateaus are wide areas of high, flat land.
• The Plateaus and Plains of Mesopotamia are
cut by the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.
How are geography, irrigation
and civilization connected?
• People live in the desert so they need to irrigate
to have enough food.
• Once they irrigate, they need canal workers
(specialized workers) and people to organize
the work (a government).
• The government workers are paid well for this
work (Social Levels).
