The Simple Future
When do you use the future tense?

The future tense is used to describe
an action which will (or is going to)
happen at a later date.
How do you form the future tense?

The endings of the simple future tense are the
same as the endings of ‘AVOIR’ in the present
tense.


-ER and –IR Verbs

To form the simple future of –ER and -IR
verbs you just need to add the endings to
the infinitive...
-ER Verbs
(manger = to eat)






Je manger ai
Tu manger as
Il/elle/on manger a
Nous manger ons
Vous manger ez
Ils/elles manger ont






I will eat
You will eat (informal)
He/she/one will eat
We will eat
You will eat (formal/group)
They will eat (masc/fem)
-IR Verbs
(dormir = to sleep)






Je dormir ai
Tu dormir as
Il/elle/on dormir a
Nous dormir ons
Vous dormir ez
Ils/elles dormir ont






I will sleep
You will sleep (informal)
He/she/one will sleep
We will sleep
You will sleep (formal/group)

-RE Verbs
(vendre = to sell)

To form the simple future of –RE verbs you
just need to remove the final E and add the
endings to the infinitive:
Je vendr ai
Tu vendr as
Il/elle/on vendr a
Nous vendr ons
Vous vendr ez
Ils/elles vendr ont






