say “I am going to…”
• In French you must say “je vais à…”
• Watch the examples:
• Je vais à la poste. (I am going to the post office.)
• Il va à la plage. (He is going to the beach)
• Nous allons à la piscine. (We are going to the
pool.)
Grammaire continued
• All the examples on the previous slides
used feminine nouns, la poste, la piscine,
la plage.
• Now look at these examples:
• Tu vas au musée? (Are you going to the
museum?)
• Il va au parc. (He is going to the park)
• Elles vont au jardin botanique. (They are going
to the botanical garden.)
Explication de grammaire
• So when the place is masculine,(le parc, le
musée, le jardin) you can’t use à and le
separately. You must put them together
and make a contraction. The contraction is
au.
• à + le = au this means to the
• au café - to the café
• au musée - to the museum
• au théâtre - to the theater
Two more things to remember:
• If the place or noun begins with a vowel,
use à l’
• If it is a plural noun, use aux
• Watch: Je vais à l’école.(I am going to school)
Nous allons aux concerts. (We go to concerts)
• Mon ami va à l’hotel. (My friend is going to the
hotel) (remember that “h” is a vowel sound.
Practice conjugating aller and using
the contractions.
