French Verb Conjugation
What is conjugation?
• The manipulation of a verb to match its
subject and tense/mood
• Found in almost all western languages
• Ex. To be: I am, you are, she is…I was, you
were
Why do we conjugate
• Conjugation improves understanding of who
did something and when they did it
• It also improves the flow of speaking in some
languages ex. I is a doctor
For whom do we conjugate
First Person Singular
First Person Plural
English: I
English: we
Français: je
Français: nous
Second Person Singular
Second Person Plural
English: you (thou)
English: you all, y’all (ye)
Français: tu
Français: vous
Third Person Singular
Third Person Plural
English: he, she, it, one
English: they
Français: il, elle, le,la. on
Français: ils, elles
How to conjugate
• For regular French verbs the beginning steps
of conjugation are the same
1.Remove the infinitive ending of the verb -er, ir, or -re (the equivalent of the English “to”)
2.Then take the stem ex. dîner – er = dîn
3.Add the verb endings according to the
infinitive ending
