their past tense by adding –d or –ed
to the verb.
Spelling Rules
•To form the affirmative past tense of most
regular verbs:
1.Add –ed to the base form of the verb.
Example: (wash-washed).
2. If the verb ends in –e, add –d.
Example: (live-lived)
3. If the verb ends in a consonant
preceded by a vowel, double the final
consonant .
Example: (stop-stopped)
4. If the verb ends in –y preceded by a
consonant, omit the “y” and add –ied.
Example: ( copy-copied)
