I will determine which personal pronoun to
use in sentences by analyzing whether it
modifies the subject, object, or predicate
nominative.

noun.
Ex. After Bill fed the dog & cat, Bill let the
dog and cat outside.
After Bill fed the dog & cat, he let them

Pronoun Matches the Antecedent
Nouns and pronouns have a gender. The
pronouns should match the original noun’s gender.
• Feminine – female; she, her, hers
• Masculine – male; he, his, him
• Neuter – neutral; it, its
• Sally opened her briefcase.
• Sam lost his hat.
• The cave had bats in it.

Predicate Nominative Pronouns
Predicate Nominative – when the subject
follows a linking verb (is, was, are, were)
Ex. The best actor is she.
Test: She is the best actor.
Object Pronouns
me, us, you, him, her, them
Object: Tim surprised her with roses.
Indirect object: Jill gave us some advice.
Following a preposition:
You can’t go to the movie without me.
*others: to her, except them

Appositives
Appositive – a noun or pronoun placed

or explain it.
