 Means
that the action is happening at that
very time (ahora mismo)




I am reading this sentence.
Estoy leyendo esta oración.
We are learning in class.
Estamos aprendiendo en clase.
1. Conjugate estar
2. Follow with “present participle”
To form:
1. remove infinitive ending
2. add -ando for -ar verbs, -iendo
for -er and -ir verbs
no e → ie changes!
e → i still to “i”
o → ue change instead to “u”
infinitives that end with a vowel before the ending
have a spelling change: -iendo → -yendo
What about pronouns?
 Pronouns
come before the conjugated
verb or can be attached to the present
participle.
Pedro se está duchando.
 Pedro está duchándose.
(Pedro is taking a shower.)
 Le estoy hablando.
 Estoy hablándole.
(I am talking to him.)

Expanded Understanding

Present tense is used to describe actions that are
repeated or are planned; present progressive is
more specific!




Voy a clase. I’m going to class.
Estoy yendo a clase. I’m going to class (right now).
Hablamos español. We speak Spanish.
Estamos hablando español. We are speaking Spanish
(right now).

Estoy bailando.
Estás aprendiendo.
Él me está hablando.
Estamos leyendo.
Estáis pidiéndole café a ella.
Ellos se están acostando.
I am dancing.
You are learning.
He is talking to me.
We are reading.
