Action Verbs / Direct Objects
TED p. 187I
Action Verb & D.O.
• An Action Verb tells WHAT the subject of a
sentence DOES
• The receiver of a verb’s action is its
DIRECT OBJECT.
• A Direct Object answers the question
WHOM? Or WHAT?
• More than one direct object may follow an
action verb.
EX: The two girls watch the sunset
with their relatives.
Then they sit by the hearth.
• Watch = action verb
• Sunset = direct object – it answers the question
“WHAT do the girls watch?”
• Sit = action verb
• The second sentence has NO direct object – it
doesn’t tell you who or what was “sit”. Don’t get
confused by the phrase “by the hearth” because
that tells you where, no who or what. Also, don’t
get confused and put “they” as your direct object
– this is your subject, and who your sentence is
about.
Write the action verb of each
sentence, then after, write the
direct object (if any)

beauty.
