Sit and Set

verb sit means to be seated.

verb set means to place something.
 Set usually takes an object

the object)
Rise and Raise
 The
verb rise means to move upward.
 Rise does not take an object.
 The fans were rising to sing the song. (no
obj.)
 The
verb raise usually takes an object.
 Fans were raising signs. (signs is the object)
Lie and Lay
 The
verb lie means to recline, or to remain
lying down.
 Lie does not take an object.
 The silverware is lying on the table. (no
object)
 The verb lay means to put, or to place.
 Lay usually takes an object.
 Bill had laid that bicycle in the driveway.
(bicycle is the object)
