The main idea of the unit
The unit talks about the change of the
world climate. More snow melts because
of global warming. This can cause a lot of
damage to the Earth.
 There was a conference about the climate
and pollution in Kyoto in Japan. Scientists
began making airplane reservations.
 One scientist thought that it was better to
go by train. Airplanes cause pollution
which results in the change of the world
climate. Others joined him and they had
very exciting experiences on the train.


Appreciate (v): think something is good
Border (n): the line that divides one country from
another
Complicated (adj) : not easy
Ferry (n): a boat or ship for taking passengers
Coast (n): the land next to or close to the sea
Arrange (v): organize
Dock (n) (v) : a specially enclosed area of water

Connecting sentences with
“and / but”
We use “and” to connect two sentences which have similar ideas.
He didn’t have to travel for work, and his friends and family lived
nearby.

We use ”but” to connect two sentences with contrasting ideas.
He was very tired , but he kept working.

When the subject of both sentences is the same, we can put a
pronoun in the second sentence.
Kim was very angry, but she didn’t show it.

We use “ ,” before “but”.
Maha kept calling, but no one answered.

Grammar
Modal verbs showing ability or
possibility


We use “can” to express ability or
possibility in the present.
I can speak English. ( ability)
He can come tomorrow. ( possibility)
We use “could” to express possibility or
ability in the past.
He could work hard when he was young.
( ability )
He could take the train. ( possibility)
Modal verbs

Negative forms:
We use “not” after “can” or “could” then the base
verb to change to the negative form.
He can’t come today.
They couldn’t reach the station because of the
bad weather yesterday.

Main structure:
can / could + base verb ( infinitive without “to”)
can / could + not + base verb. ( negative form)
