Verb –
A word that shows action or links a noun or

Common linking verbs:
be
is
are
was
were
am
been
being
Other linking verbs:

feel
grow (as in I’m growing impatient.
not The tree grows in the field.)

Let’s Practice – Find the noun and the verb
(action or linking) that works with the noun.

She was sad.
Yesterday, her mother left for a vacation.
The girl is anxious for her mother to return.
Helping Verbs
Usually a verb stands alone (barked, sing, throw)
but sometimes the main verb is supplemented by a
helping verb.
For example:
I will have a cupcake for dessert.
You should have known that I would want two!
Adverb –
A word that modifies a verb,
an adjective, or another adverb.
There are four basic types of adverbs.
Adverbs of TIME (when, how often, and how long):
tomorrow, often, never
Adverbs of PLACE (where, to where, or from where)
there, backward, outside
Adverbs of MANNER (tell how something is done; usually
ending in –ly)
gently, unkindly, well
Adverbs of DEGREE (tell how much or how little):
scarcely, entirely, generally
Let’s Practice: Find the verb and adverb in the
