Conditional/Modal Verb Tenses

Conditional Tense
• Is used to speculate about the future situations
that could possibly happen.
• Used when actions is uncertain
• Action usually relies on something else
Examples of Conditional tense
• I would be really glad. (If you could help me).
• We should send the fax. (But we do not know
how to do it).
• I would travel by plane. (If I wanted to go on
holiday. But I do not want to go.)
Real Conditional
Unreal Conditional
• Used to describe what you
normally do in real- life
situations
Example:
• When I have a day off from
work, I often go to the beach.
• If the weather is nice,
she walks to work.
• Jerry helps me with my
homework when he has time.
• I read if there is nothing on
TV.
• Used to talk about what you
would generally do in
imaginary situations.
Examples:
• If I owned a car, I would
drive to work. But I don't own
a car.
• She would travel around the
world if she had more money.
But she doesn't have much
money.
• I would read more if I didn't
watch so much TV.
• Mary would move to Japan if
she spoke Japanese.
Modal Verbs
Sometimes referred to as an auxiliary verb
• Modifies another verb
• The modified verb ends up having a deeper
intention
