Multiple Operating Systems
Software
• Software is a set of instructions for the
computer to follow to accomplish a task.
• Operating System = Set of instructions that
controls all hardware and software on the
computer
Four most popular current desktop
operating systems
• 1 Windows
• 2 Macintosh OS X
• 3 Linux (We use the Ubuntu version in lab)
• 4 Chrome OS (Not the web browser.)
Reasons For Multiply OS’s
• Security = Move away from herd
• Some software only runs in certain OS’s
• Can make upgrading OS’s less scary
• Access to OS’s specific features
Multiple Boot Computer
• What is it?
– Hardest and riskiest way to have multiple OS’s
– You create multiple partitions on your hard
drive.
– You install different operating systems on
different partitions.
– Pick out which OS to use what computer starts
up (like the computer in lab).
Multiple Boot Computer
• Pros:
– Fastest way to run another operating system.
• Good for gaming
– Cheap (Ubuntu is free).
– Can run less popular operating system on your computer to access
the Internet more securely.
– Can reuse an old Mac or Windows computer with Ubuntu
– Can run Windows only software in a Mac.
• Cons:
– Need to reboot computer to use other operating system.
– May need to buy Windows license.
– Partitioning a drive is risky (make sure to have complete backup in
place before attempting).
Multiple Boot Mac
• How is it done?
• Putting Windows on a Mac.
– Get Windows install disks with license. Run the Apple Boot
Camp Assistant program located in the Utilities folder. It will
step you through the process of installing Windows. (Warning:
Have a complete backup before you partition drive.)
• Putting Ubuntu on a Mac.
– Create a Ubuntu install CD or Flash Drive (directions on Ubuntu
website). Boot off CD or Flash Drive, partition drive, and install
Ubuntu (Warning: Have a complete backup before you partition
a drive.)
Multiple Boot Windows
• How is it done?
• Putting Ubuntu on a Windows computer using two
partitions.
– Create a Ubuntu install CD or Flash Drive (directions on Ubuntu
website). Boot off CD or Flash Drive and install Ubuntu
(Warning: Have a complete backup before you partition a drive.)
• Putting Mac on a Windows computer.
– Not legal to do.
Much Easier Less Risky Way To Have
Multiple Boot Ubuntu In Windows
• Download and Install Ubuntu as an application in
Windows
– Installs as a application in Windows
• If you do not like just remove program using Add/Remove Programs
control panel in Windows.
• How do I install Windows as an application in Windows?
– Follow the directions here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer
– Pros:
• Can use safer operating system when accessing the Internet
• Do not need to partition hard drive.
• Free
– Cons:
• Runs a little slower then it would if installed on own partition.
• Cannot run Windows and Ubuntu at the same time.
Virtual Computers
• What is it?
– You install software that allows you to create
virtual operating systems on your computer.
– You can then run multiple operating systems on
your computer at the same time.
– You can create as many virtual operating
systems as you have room on your hard drive.
Virtual Computer On A
Windows or Mac
• How is it done?
– First you install the virtual software
• Parallels Desktop $80
• VMware Fusion $80
• VirtualBox $Free
– Then create new virtual operating systems.
– Open and run as many operating systems as
your computer is capable.
Virtual Computers
• Pros:
– No need to reboot computer to use other operating systems.
– Can use less popular operating system to access Internet for more
security.
– Do not need to partition hard drive.
• Cons:
– Slower way to run another operating system.
• Not as good for gaming
– May have to pay for virtualization software.
Easiest Way To Install Ubuntu For Extra
Security
• Download and Install Virtual Box
• Download and create a Ubuntu install CD
– Mac or Windows
• Run Virtual Box and install Ubuntu as guest OS.
• Pros:
–
–
–
–
Can use safer operating system when accessing the Internet
Do not need to partition hard drive.
Can access Mac/Windows at same time.
Free
• Cons:
– Runs a little slower then it would if installed on own partition.
