their jobs in feudal society.
• 3 rulers from the Frankish empire and 1 thing
they are known for.
• 2 groups of invaders of the Frankish Kingdom.
• 1 important vocabulary word with the
definition.
Manorial System
• Manor- Lord’s estate. Also an economic
arrangement between the lord and his
peasants.
• The manor was self sufficient.

• Chivalry- A code of behavior during the
middles ages that stresses courage, loyalty,
and devotion. (Lord, lord, and lady)

• Noblewomen- Could act as military
commander and also inherit the estate of her
husband.

How much power does it have?
The Far-Reaching Authority of the
Church
• Amid the weak central governments in feudal
Europe, the Church emerged as a powerful
institution.
• As the church expanded its political role,
strong rulers began to question the pope’s
authority.
• According to one pope, God had created two
symbolic swords: religious & political. The
belief was that the two leaders could share
power in harmony.

• The church was a stable force during an era of
constant warfare and political turmoil.
• How did the Church make people feel?
– Provided Christians with a sense of security and of
belonging to a religious community
• Sacraments – important religious ceremonies;
they were a way to achieve salvation (ex.
Baptism)
• Canon law – Church law
• Two of the harshest punishments for breaking
canon law were:
– Excommunication – banishment from the Church
– Interdict – religious services could not be performed
in a king’s land
Emperor Clashes with the Pope
• One of the main problems the Church had
with kings was the practice of lay investiture –
a ceremony where kings appointed church
officials
• What was stated in the Concordat
(agreement) of Worms?
– Church could appoint a bishop but the emperor
could veto the appointment
Disorder in the Empire
• Kings attempted to revive Charlemagne’s
empire and his alliance with the Church.
• This did not happen…
The Age of Faith
• As a new age of religious feeling was born,
what problems troubled the Church?
– Some priests were illiterate
– Some popes were men of questionable morals
– Bishops cared more about position as lords/nobles
– Priests were married (against Church rulings)
– Simony – selling of Church positions
– Lay investiture
Reform & Church Organization
• The Church collected taxes called tithes. How much
was it? 10% of yearly income
– Some money used to care for sick and poor
• Many people devoted their lives to serving God:
Monks live in monasteries, nuns live in convents.
– Opened schools, maintained libraries, copied books
– Some lived in isolation
• Friars (wandering preachers):
– Like monks, they took vows of chastity, poverty, and
obedience
– Unlike monks, they did not live apart from the world;
they traveled from town to town preaching
CHOOSE TWO (2) OF THE FOLLOWING:
• Create a picket sign. A picket sign is used to protest something.
Pretend you are living during the Middle Ages when the Church is
experiencing many problems. Pick one of the problems the Church is
experiencing and create a picket sign to protest that issue.
OR
• Create a recruitment flyer for the Catholic Church. Living during the
Middle Ages was not a comfortable or safe situation for many people.
Think about why the Church would have wanted to get more
members and what they would have promised to those people.
(Make sure to include the 3 key terms in some way.)
Make sure to make your flyer appealing to the eye. Include an
illustration.
OR
• Write a letter to the pope (at least ½ page) telling him what is wrong
with the Church and why you no longer wish to be a member.
