LET’S WORK TOGETHER
I will be stressing from the first day that
teaching your child is a joint responsibility.
The child that excels in school most often has
parents or other adult family members
supporting and encouraging their learning at
home. Working together I hope we can make a
this a terrific year of learning for your child.

Common Core
•The idea is to provide deeper, richer learning
to prepare students for the 21st century
workforce.
•Allow students to think more deeply.
•Students are asked not just for the right
answers but how they got to those answers.
A Look at Common Core
Language Arts- What is new is that the discussion
that follows is more in depth, and more rigorous.
Who is telling the story in Charlotte’s Web?
What is your point of view about Wilbur?
How does Wilbur feel towards Charlotte at
the end of the story?
How is it different from Fern’s point of
view about Wilbur?
How do you know?
How is it different from the narrator’s
point of view?
•In order to be successful in this task, the student has to have
listened to the teacher and engaged in the rich classroom
discussion that occurs after each chapter has been read. He has
to think about why Fern sees Wilbur in a different way
than the Narrator does, and explain that.
Accelerated Reader
• Comprehension quizzes are taken after
students have read a book
corresponding to their reading level.
90% or better is passing.
Once passing 3 quizzes they move up in levels.
They also have an opportunity to move up levels
when the take the Star comprehension test.

Students are responsible for recording, completing and
turning in homework assignments on a daily basis. Please
take the time to check you child’s homework notebook as I
do ask for parent signature on incomplete assignments.
Students are also responsible for recording reading on
“Reading Logs”. “Reading Logs” are to be kept in homework
folder to be checked off daily.
* Work is to be neat and complete. Done by your child in your
child’s writing.
Student of the Month
Two students each Month are selected. Selection is
