COMMON TECHNOLOGY TRAPS
MEDIUM VS HIGH SPEED DIESELS
• Do they really have higher
fuel efficiency?
• What about their cost, size,
weight?
• How do they help power
systems achieve high
renewable energy
penetration?

COMMON TECHNOLOGY TRAPS
BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS
• Excellent for straight-forward use in
smaller power systems with limited
need for power system stability
• In larger systems need to be paired
with other enabling technologies to
provide reliable power system
operation
INDEPENDENT POWER PRODUCERS
• Utilities have a
responsibility towards
reliable power supply of a
community, while IPPs are
driven by profit
• IPP generators should
provide full power system
support just like diesel
generators are, to be fairly
compared to existing
generation.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE STAFF
• Moving away from usual diesel fitters and electricians
• Renewable energy technologies are new technologies and
require new skill sets
• Operations and maintenance crews
need to be trained in informational
technologies and complex control
systems.
