
ORGANISMS- living things
 Must possess ALL 9 of the following
characteristics
Living things “R-CHARGE2D”

(Not every organism has to reproduce,
but the species must)


ability to maintain internal conditions
separate from an outside environment.
Examples:
 Body Temperature at 98.6 degrees,
sweating, shivering
 Water levels in body

An adaptation is…
 a characteristic that affects chances of survival
 Can be advantageous or not
 Inherited
 Examples: Owls large eyes help to see at
night
Ex- A plant growing in a specific
direction due to a light stimulus
Doesn’t have to be MOVEMENT-

Example: Temperature turns
cold & dry (stimulus) and
trees loose leaves
(response)
 Getting Bigger / Increasing material
“the capacity to do
work”
 (and it takes work to
maintain the
organization of the
cell and the organism)

The gradual accumulation of adaptations
due to environmental stimuli.
(Organisms with more suitable adaptations
are more likely to survive and reproduce)
 Cannot occur in an individual- only in
species over many generations!

 Changes during the life of an
organism
 Not just growing, but “maturing”
…Or is it???
How did you
