BIOLOGY
UNIT 1
CHARACTERISTICS
OF
LIVING THINGS
ORGANIZATION



All living things have 1 or more cells.
More complex organisms group their cells to
increase the level of function.

Systems
REPRODUCTION

2 types: Asexual(Bacteria) and Sexual (Plants)

Need to produce fertile offspring
Prevent extinction

GROWTH and DEVELOPMENT

Increase amount of material

Differentiation-specialized cells and
organs
Metamorphosis (butterfly)

Obtain and Use Energy





Obtain energy from environment
Anabolism: synthesis (uses energy)
Catabolism: break down (produces energy)
Metabolism= Anabolism +Catabolism-sum
total of energy production and usage
What is the “Energy “ we keep referring to?
ATP
Response to Environment



STIMULUS- anything that causes organism to
react
Response- response to stimulus
HOMEOSTASIS- regulation of an organism’s
internal environment that is suitable to survival
(ex. Sweating vs. shivering)
