Trace back to Muhammad's uncle al-Abbas
They challenged Umayyad in year 747
Start of revolt when palace officials introduce troops into the Merv area
when there were lots of angry troops who had already settle and were not
given a fair share of booty for fighting and defending the frontiers.
Leader was Abu al- abbas, the great great grandson of Muhammad’s
uncle.
Important people were Shi’a and the Malawi and non-Arab converts to
Islam

Umayyad vs. Abbasid forces in 750
The Umayyad caliph led his army himself
Took place in Tigris
Abbasid won.
To make it official that the Abbasid were in
charge, they decided to get ride of the Umayyad
family.
The Umayyad family were invited to a feast, and
while enjoying the feast, Abbas’s troops covered
them in carpet and slaughtered them.
They then went out to find the rest of the family
members and killed most of them. One escaped
to Spain.

became a universal religion
 Founded Baghdad
 Became centralists
 Rejected old allies
 Decorated thrones with jewels
 Expanded number of bureaucrats
 Collected revenue from empire

Islamic conversion




People such as the Turks, Persians and Berbers
were persuaded to convert to Islam.
Mawalis were given equal rights and eventually
converted into Islam
Greater opportunities for education and jobs, if
you converted.
No more head tax for being non-Muslim

religious schools, baths, and rest houses
Made hospitals and became the best in medical care in the
world
Handicraft production- furniture, glassware, jewelry,
tapestries and carpet
Slaves had done lower jobs, but it was better to have it in
the Urban area then the rural area, because of their was at
least a chance to get freedom in urban areas.
Thousand and One Nights

The Thousand and One Nights are folktales about
the wealthy of the Abassid empire. It
exaggerates on the elite’s riches. It includes
passages about a material consumption for the
wealthy, a prince getting a lot of education and a
women being able to get many items in the
market. It also had The Hall of the Tree, an idea
of an artificial tree made completely out of gold
and silver with gold birds that chirp.
