• Many Muslims believe
that Allah &
Muhammad set high
standards for the
treatment of women
• Before Islam it was
common for Arabs to
kill their daughters
they were less
valuable than boys

• Women did not have
the right to own
property
• They were dependent
on fathers, brothers,
husbands for their
basic human needs
e.g. food etc

• Widows and women
deserted by their
husband could be left
destitute
• Muhammad
challenged their
attitudes and
practices

• He passed on the
message from Allah that
they were not to be killed
at birth and had the right
to property.
• He called for people to
treat widows and orphans
fairly.
