• Caste system rejected
• ALL life respected
Eightfold Path
Middle Path = Moderation
Not too much or too little of anything
Teaching Centered on Thought & Actions of People
Karma & Rebirth
• A person’s thoughts, speech, & actions during
their lifetime = karma
• All good and bad karma travel with a person
into the next world…therefore, karma =
rebirth
• Instead of a soul or personality traveling with
a person from one life to the next, it is their
karma that “travels”
• Life is continual change / don’t try to hold on
to life or personality or it will cause suffering
• “Go with the flow” (Do you recall this term?)
Buddhist Tradition Has Three Parts 
The Three Jewels
• Jewel 1 = Buddha
• Jewel 2 = dharma (the law)
• Jewel 3 = religious community = sangha
Buddhism moved from India to China, Korea,
Japan, Tibet, Burma, and other parts of
Southeast Asia.
A GREAT Buddhist Ruler
Look at pages 239 & 240 in the textbook. Let’s
read silently, then pick out critical points.
