Transcript Criticisms of the MM & Alternative Theory LOP

Objective 1/2
To know the criticisms of the
Multi store model of memory
Evaluation Grid
• Cut out the squares
• Lay them out.
• As we go through the power points,
arrange them into the right boxes.
Hint – all the ones in bold are Critics’
points.
Criticism 1: The model is too rigid and
ignores individual differences
• Does everyone have the same memory
structure?
• Surely some people have
a greater capacity than others.
• Visual/ Auditory/ Kinaesthetic Memories.
Criticism 2: The model oversimplifies the STM and LTM.
• The STM can deal with more information
than the MModel theorises.
STM
• There are different types of LTM store.
LTM
General
knowledge
Autobiography
Procedures
Criticism 3: The model over emphasises the role of rehearsal
• Does everything have to be rehearsed?
– We rehearse telephone numbers or names
to help us remember them.
• But what about tastes and smells?
• Also, info is stored in
the LTM when
it is meaningful

Explanation
Critics’ Points
The model is too rigid
and ignores individual
differences.
It assumes that each person’s
memory system has the same
structure.
They argue that some people
MUST have a greater capacity
for memory than others.
It does not explain why some
people have a better memory
than others
They argue that some people
have good memories for
certain types of information,
while others have better
memories for other types.
The STM is not a store where
information just passes
through.
They argue that the STM is
more active than this and can
deal with different types of
inputs at once.
There is more than one type of
LTM store.
They argue that there
different LTM stores for
storing:
general knowledge
autobiographical events
procedures
Not all information stored in
the LTM has to be rehearsed.
Do we really rehearse smells
and tastes to store them in the
LTM?
They argue that there is a lot
of information that is stored
in the LTM because it is
meaningful and not because it
has been rehearsed.
The model oversimplifies the STM and
LTM.
The model overemphasises the role of
rehearsal.
Objective 2/2
Levels of Processing
To be aware of an alternative
explanation of memory; LOP.
*Levels of Processing*
• The multi store model is
criticised for its over
emphasis on the role of
rehearsal.
• Critics of the MM, say
that we remember
things long term
because they have
meaning, not because we
rehearse them.

Back of your book:
Identify whether the tasks were examples of shallow
or deep processing? Task 1/3
1. Reading the colour of each word.
2. What was the girl was thinking?
3. What am i? riddle.
4. Identifying the capital lettered words.
5. What colour was Pharrell’s slide?
Identify whether these tasks were
shallow or deep processing?
1. Reading the colour of each word.
2. What was the girl was thinking?
3. What am i? riddle.
4. Identifying the capital lettered words.

and Levels of Processing Theory

Levels of Processing
Multi Store Model
To finish off choose #1 or #2
1. Can you state the 3 criticisms of the multi store
model of memory.
2. Identify shallow and deep processing in the table.
