Session 4: GOCE for
Solid Earth
Chairs:
M. van der Meijde
J. Ebbing
Key questions from GOCE Solid Earth workshop 2012
• Is there a real benefit from using GOCE?
• Global models vs gradients
– Why use gradients at all?
– Could gradients be obtained/provided directly from global models (at grid
size& altitude of choice)?
– Recommended to use observed gradients at altitude where they are
measured?
• Gravity with other data
– Complementarity with seismic tomography to be exploited further?
– seismology could add vertical information, gravity the spatial continuity
– but what is needed to make this happen, do we have all the information???
Key questions from GOCE Solid Earth workshop 2012
• Is there a real benefit from using GOCE? Yes.
• Global models vs gradients

Spatial and discontinuous information!

Local modelling with global grids?
– Recommended to use observed gradients at altitude where they are
measured?
Depends on your target of interest.
• Gravity with other data ???
