Accomplishments
First continent-to-continent conjugate margin images.
Segment-scale variability of crust and lithosphere
structure and COB transition along the Gulf.
Alarcon Basin
Integrated upper-mantle and crustal cross section from recent work
presented at the RCL-Cortez workshop.
What is still unknown?
What boundary conditions controlled the segment-scale
response of the lithosphere to rifting?
Subduction system and slab?
Weak lower crust or rigid batholith?
What is the structure of the mantle?
flow pattern?
temperature and viscosity structure?
What is Needed?
Better determination of the
mantle structure by both
regional 3D models and
broad transects aligned
with active source lines.
Improved knowledge of
crustal structure around
the onshore margins of the
Gulf (Baja, Sonora/Sinaloa,
Northern GEP).
These will provide the input parameters and observational
constraints for the 3D geodynamical model of rifting in the Gulf.
