Please sit down
-Complete agenda
TEACHER PREP
1. CUT OUT SQUARES OF ALUMINUM FOIL
Bell Ringer
•On the white board, draw
what YOU think the layers of
the earth look like. Label the
names of the layers, if
possible.
STEP 1:
Spread out newspaper to cover your table
IS ANYONE ALLERGIC TO RED FOOD DYE??? OR CORN STARCH???
STEP 2
Title your composition notebook:
EARTH LAYERS
IS ANYONE ALLERGIC TO FOOD DYE??? OR CORN STARCH???

Rocks & Minerals
Soil
Sand
Water
THIS IS THE TOP LAYER.
WE LIVE ON THE EARTH’S CRUST
Thinnest layer
Weights represent which layer?
Which layer does this represent? What are its
physical properties?
1. Inner coreRECORD YOUR OBSERVATIONS
INNER CORE

MOST DENSE Layer
VERY HIGH TEMP- hottest layer
SOLID
HIGH PRESSURE- PRESSURE MAKES IT SOLID
MAGNETIC
VERY SLOWLY COOLING
MADE OF METAL- IRON AND NICKLE

Solid
Heavy
Hot
Made of metal
Lots of pressure
Dense
Magnetic
Slow cooling
2. Outer core
•Iron and nickel (metal)
•Liquid
•Hot, but not quite as hot as the
inner core
•LARGEST (thickest) layer
OUTER CORE
•METAL- MADE OF IRON AND NICKLE
•LIQUID- SAME COMPOSITION AS
INNER CORE, BUT UNDER LESS
PRESSURE SO ITS LIQUID NOT SOLID
•HIGH TEMPERTURES
•Thickest layer
3. MANTLE
• SLIMY
• LIQUID-?
3. Mantle
-has properties of both a liquid and a
solid, but is technically a liquid. Is
made of MOLTEN, LIQUID HOT ROCK
WHICH IS CALLED MAGMA (MAGMA IS
LAVA THAT IS UNDER GROUND)
STEP 3
-HAVE
A PERSON FROM YOUR GROUP MEASURE OUT
TWO HEAPING SPOONFULS OF CORNSTARCH INTO
ONE CUP
-ADD ONE DROP OF FOOD COLORING TO YOUR CUP;
RED TO REPRESENT THE MANTLE (A STUDENT WILL COME
BY TO ADD WATER TO YOUR STYROFOAM CUPS)
STEP 4
ONCE WATER HAS BEEN ADDED TO YOUR CUP, STIR
THE MIXTURE TOGETHER.
YOU SHOULD HAVE ONE CUP DYED RED TO
REPRESENT THE ____________.
WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES THAT YOU
OBSERVE ABOUT THIS LAYER?
RECORD YOUR OBSERVATIONS
3. Mantle
•Is liquid rock, but sometimes acts
like a solid
•When it dries, it becomes solid rock
•Flows- always moving up and down
•Magma
4. Crust- top layer/ surface of earth
•Solid
•Made of rock and dirt
•Where life on earth exists
•Dry
•Thinnest layer
•Two types of crust: oceanic crust or
continental crust

STEP 6
TOUCH THE FINAL LAYER, AND DESCRIBE ITS PHYSICAL PROPERTIES.
RECORD YOUR OBSERVATIONS
