Composition of the
Earth’s Layers
Crust
• Solid: Minerals and rocks (igneous,
sedimentary, metamorphic)
• Thickness: ~ 8 – 50 km
Mantle
• Solid (mostly); similar to stony meteorites
• Thickness: ~ 2,900 km
Core
• Outer is liquid; inner is solid; composition
similar to iron meteorites
• Thickness: Outer ~2,300km
Inner ~1,200km
Definitions
(add to the left side of your notebook)
• Crust – Earth’s outermost layer, made of
solid rock.
• Mantle – The layer below the crust and
above the core. It is made of solid rock
that is somewhat different in composition
than the crust.
• Core – Earth’s innermost division, made of
mostly metals, especially iron and nickel.
