The Symbol for Mercury
Relative location
Mercury is the planet that is closet to the
sun. It is between the sun and Venus.
Mercury cannot be seen as a full planet
from earth. It can only be seen as a
gibbous, more than half but less than full.
Mercury has three
layers just like Earth.
1. Crust: 100-300 km thick
2. Mantle: 600 km thick
3. Core: 1,800 km radius
About Mercury…..
• Its diameter is 40% smaller than Earth and
about 40% larger than Earth’s moon.
• It is the second smallest planet.
• Its equatorial radius is 2,439.7 kilometers.
Also…
• It’s distance from the sun is 57,910,00
kilometers .
• Mercury was named by the Romans
Mercury’s Rotation
One mercury day lasts about 176 Earth
days.
It takes Mercury only about 88 days to orbit
around the sun.
A Hot-Cold Planet
Mercury’s long afternoons and closeness to
the sun makes its surface very hot in the
day. It is more tan 227 degrees Celsius or
700 hundred degrees Fahrenheit!!
The side of Mercury that is not facing the
sun is -300 degrees Fahrenheit.
