River Sal
There is simply no better way to enjoy Goa than from the water. And no,
we don’t mean just swimming or riding the waves in the ocean – we are
referring to Goa’s plenitude of rivers and backwaters that allow one a
peek into Goa’s rarely seen hinterland.
Goa’s interiors are connected by water in a way that simply has to be
experienced to be believed. Enjoy exploring the fascinating Sal river,
sometimes referred to as the Mississippi of Salcete taluka!
The Salcete taluka, an area of about 300 km2,is intimately linked to the
wellbeing of its only river basin, the geologically special and ecologically
fragile Sal river basin. Sal is the third largest river (35 km) in Goa with
the third largest basin (301 km2). Considered a geological and
hydrological oddity, the Sal is a really unusual waterbody.
It is the only river that follows a north-south direction before meeting the Arabian Sea
at Betul. The river opens near Cavelossim in south Goa.
The Sal backwaters are truly a part of Goa unseen. Navigating this river is a delightful
experience. Only accessible by kayak, this ecosystem is something which is
experienced by only the lucky few.
Enjoy river fishing, angling, crabbing, riverine village life, backwater photography, bird
watching or just cruising. Cruising down the small tributaries of this river can make for
quite an unforgettable water and land experience! This wetland paradise is a part of
Goa which is rarely seen.
Birdwatchers can enjoy the opportunity to see over forty species of different birds
including four types of kingfishers and a host of cormorants, drongos, herons, egrets
and waterfowl.
Even if you’re not interested in bird-watching, a lazy, up and down paddle on flat
waters, is something you must see and experience in Goa. Nothing beats the
unbound serenity of an early morning paddle down the calm waters. Enjoy your
solitude or take a romantic sojourn for two in twilight. With the sky above and water
below,
this

Take up your oars and get going!
