TERMITE GUT FAUNA
Several species of bacteria and
protozoa inhabit the gut of
termites. Some spirochete bacteria
attach to the surface of protozoa
and hitch-hike through the
nutrient-rich medium in the gut.
Gut bacteria produce cellulase, the
enzyme necessary to digest the
cellulose present in the wood
devoured by the termites.
