Transcript power point: energy flow through ecosystems

PRODUCERS
•Organisms that take in and use energy from the Sun.
•Autotrophic
•Example: plants, algae
CONSUMERS
•Organisms that take in energy when they feed on
producers or other consumers.
•Examples: human, fish, birds
DECOMPOSERS
•Organisms that break down the remains of dead
organisms.
•Example: bacteria, mushrooms
•A model that shows how energy passes
from one organism to another.
•Arrows between organisms indicated
the direction of energy transfer.
•Usually only have three or four links.
•Available energy decreases from one
link to the next link.
•ALL ENERGY COMES FROM
THE SUN!!!!
•A series of overlapping food
chains.
•Provided a more complete model
of the way energy moves through
an ecosystem.
•Show how many organisms are part
of a food chain.
•There and land and aquatic food
webs.
•Models the number of organisms at
each level of a food chain.
•Compares the energy available at
each level.
•Usually only has three or four levels.
•Top of the pyramid’s energy is
greatly reduced.
