The Bare Necessities of Life
What we need to live?
• What are some things that are needed by
living organisms?
• Why do they need them?
Water
• Our bodies are made up mostly of water it
makes up 70% of our cells.
Air
• Air has a combination of
gases: N, O, and CO2
– Oxygen (O2) used in
respiration reaction which
converts sugar to energy
– Carbon dioxide (CO2)
• Green plants, algae and
some bacteria use CO2
to produce oxygen and food
by photosynthesis
Not all organisms need O2
•Organisms that can live with out air are anaerobic
•Clostridium botulinum
•Produces botulin a toxin that could be toxic to
humans
•Never feed honey to a baby under 1 year old
A place to live
Food
• Producer: an organism that can make its own
food by using energy from its surroundings
Food
• Consumer: an
organism that eats
other organisms or
organic matter
Food
• Decomposer: an
organism that gets
energy by breaking
down the remains
of dead organisms
or animal wastes
and consuming or
absorbing nutrients
decomposer
decomposers
Our friend the Superworm
• You will now have the
opportunity to provide
the necessities of life to
a colony of superworms
and you will observe
and describe what
affects their growth and
life cycle
