Transcript living things and abiogenesis

Characteristics of living things

Composed of one or more cells

Can reproduce either sexually or asexually

Grow and develop

Use energy and raw materials from the
environment

Respond to stimuli from their environment

Have a life span
Origins of living things

Abiogenesis

This theory states that living things can
be transformed from non-living things.

Ex: Frogs and fish from mud

Ex: Flies from rotting meat
Seriously?
False!



Abiogenesis was proven to be false in 1608
by F. Redi.
Redi used a controlled experiment to test
the hypothesis that rotting meat can be
transformed into flies
(and, as it turns out, it cannot!)
But what about for microbes?

J. Needham


Abiogenesis is true!



Loosely sealed
meat broth had
mold and bacteria
even after boiling
Microbes must
have come from the
broth!


Spallanzani
Abiogenesis isn't
true!!
Boiled flasks of
broth longer and
completely sealed
them
No microbes found!
Pasteur


This dude also didn't believe in Abiogenesis
for microbes
He finally proved it wrong by using swan
necked flasks in his experiments. (microbes
do NOT come from non-living things)
