Constitution of the Prostate Cancer Center
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in male (26% of all new cancer diseases in man, RKI Germany)
The Prostate Cancer Center was established for an optimal interdisciplinary and guideline-conformed diagnosis and
treatment of prostate cancer. It is an interdisziplinary center for improvement of the quality of supply by closely
cooperation of the health care providers in diagnosis, treatment and follow up care of patients with prostate cancer
disease.
Common strategies for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are developed in interdisziplinary conferences such as
tumor boards and quality circles .
Cooperation partners of the Prostate Cancer Center are:
Department of Urology
Department of Radiooncology
Department of Hematooncology
Department of Nuclear medicine
Center for Radiology
Institute of Pathology
Furthermore there is a close cooperation with partners in psychooncology, rehabilitation, palliative care and the
patient support group of prostate cancer.
Specific professional competences
For patients with prostate cancer exist multimodal therapy options (surgical treatment, radiotherapy, antihormonal
drug treatment or combination therapies dependent on stage of the disease.
Since January 2011 we perform robotic-assisted (da Vinci Si
Surgical System) radical prostatectomy at the department of
urology.
From january to april 2011 48 patients were operated with this
method (overall 59 radical prostatectomies in this period, in
2010 overall 72 radical prostatectomies).
By enhancing surgical capabilities, this method offers a number
of potential benefits, including less pain following the operation,
less blood loss, faster and more complete functional recovery.

Another therapeutic option in prostate cancer is the
local radiotherapy.
Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is an
advanced mode of high-precision radiotherapy
utilizing computer-controlled linear accelerators for
precise radiation of a malignant tumor. IMRT is
performed at the department of radiooncology since
2001, also for patients with prostate cancer disease.
Certification of conformity to the professional prostate cancer center- requirements of the german cancer
association will be performed in june 2011.
