Cloud Computing
Overview (taken from Wikipedia
(2009))

Cloud computing is a style of computing in
which dynamically scalable and often
virtualised resources are provided as a service
over the Internet (Wikipedia 2009)
And...?

For ‘Cloud’ we could substitute in some cases
internet.
–
–
–
–
Infrastructure as a service.
Platform as a service.
Software as a service.
Web 2.0
Infrastructure as a service



The resources such as memory, cpu time,
servers etc; delivered as a service.
Scaling is dynamic what you need scales up
and down depending of the application.
Where service item has a fixed price - costs
can vary.
Platform as a service.

The whole of a web-delivered applications and
services all over internet.

Development
Delivery
No software necessarily needs to be
downloaded.
Sometimes called cloudware.

EC2
Allows customers to rent computers to run their own
applications.
EC2 providing a web interface through which a
customer can create virtual machines,

A server instances, where customer can load any software.
paying by the hour for active servers.



Salesforce.com's Platform-as-a-Service product is
known as the Force.com Platform. The platform allows
external developers to create add-on applications that
integrate into the main Salesforce application and are
hosted on salesforce.com's infrastructure.
Saleforce.com provide Customer Relations
Management Software.
Google Apps (Google 2008)




Google App Engine enables developers to build web
applications on the same scalable systems that power
our own applications. (Google 2008).
Pay for what you use.
App Engine costs nothing to get started. All
applications can use up to 500 MB of storage and
enough CPU and bandwidth to service around 5 million
page views a month, absolutely free.
pay for resources you use above the free levels.
What is the ‘Killer Application’
