Business Modelling for Internet Based Technology
Lecture 2 - Self Study on Evolution of the Internet
§ This lecture is for you to work through at your own pace
and level. Take note of the key points made and
depending upon your existing knowledge - have a look at
the supporting materials.
§ ………………………………read everything???? -->

Self Study - what to read
§ You do not have to slog through and read all of the supporting
materials but just enough to be comfortable at this stage of the
unit to have a feel for where internet technologies have come
from, how they are evolving now and where they might be
going next.
§ We go into detail on many of the areas mentioned, during the
research topic studies and when using the case study.
§ So be selective based upon your previous experience, usually
for each area there is a simple and a detailed reading/study
reference.
§ …….………………………….summarise take notes!!! -->

Self Study - recording understanding

Recording what you are learning.
Good idea to take notes or even better to have a go at
drawing ‘mind maps’ which we will look at in your
first tutorial.

Also keep checking the web resource which will begin
to fill with reference material over the next couple of
weeks:
• Web Resource
• http://www.syllabus.org.uk then select CM322
• Or Blackboard Site – External Links – CM322

Internet History
§ The internet concept and its associated technologies are
relatively young but have evolved and continue to evolve
at an incredible rate:
For a simple internet history - have a look at the
‘Introduction to the Internet’ reference
For a bit more detail look at the ‘Internet History’
reference.

Growth of Web Technologies
§ The types of systems that are possible using Internet
Technology have changed substantially over recent years.
Early systems - mainly for content display mainly static
with some multi media capability
Middle systems - more dynamic content big range of
multi media opportunities
Later systems - above plus more interactive with potential
users, forms etc and beginning to use databases
Currently all of above plus increasingly programmable more potential for business use and as a systems delivery
platform and as an integrative technology.

Growth of Web Technologies
» As internet technology has emerged as an integrative and
versatile platform there has been massive interest and investment
in developing integrated software, environments and
development tools
» See Hobbes Internet Timeline http:\\www.shu.ac.uk for a feel for
the spread of the internet and emergence of supporting
technologies - look at how it has escalated in the last couple of
years -- the tables at the end are useful for growth statistics.
To get an idea of the range and uses of internet technology today
have a look at the ‘Range of Internet Technology and Uses’
reference.

Growth of Web Technology - examples
§ World Wide Web Consortium. W3C - Web's 10th anniversary.
Conference Track topics include
§ Extensible Markup, Extensible Stylesheet, and Synchronized
Multimedia Integration Languages (XML, XSL, and SMIL);
Java, virtual documents, hypermedia, user interactions, search
engines, security, scripting, servlets, and internationalization;
Python, payments, protocols, and performance; Resource
Description Framework (RDF), graphics, marketplaces, and
distributed authoring and versioning (WebDAV); digital object
identifiers (DOI), discovery, querying, mining, adapting, and
learning, open-source software.
See ‘Opportunities for Web Use’ reference for further examples
See ‘Web Terminology’ reference for index and info on Internet
terminology.

Impact on Business - some quotes
§ The reach of Internet/Intranet technologies to virtually
every desktop in the enterprise is creating a crisis for IT
managers. On one hand, it is bringing every user onto the
enterprise network. At the same time, rising expectations
are creating new challenges for IT.
§ Enterprise wide access is not only creating new mounds
of stored information, it is also driving the demand for
access to existing or legacy data stores. Information once
collected, collated, stored and used by a single enterprise
department is now perceived as being useful to
individuals in all parts of the enterprise.

Changing Uses of Web Technology - Internal
§ Internet Technology as an integrative mechanism and as a
development platform supporting:
Decentralized computing and shared information
Enhancing internal company communication
Faster modular (component) system development
Legacy system update/integration
Web enabling database (also warehouse) applications
Information/document management - Intranet Systems
Potential for knowledge management
New ways of working – home, mobile, distributed etc
New organisational forms, smart organisations, virtual
organisations
Business Modelling for Internet Based Technology
Changing Uses of Web Technology - External
§ Rich information technology, globalisation of markets and
standards, growing international competition, increasing
customer demands/expectations - are key forces driving
use and deployment of internet technology for external
uses.
For sales and marketing – information gathering
For global company presence/advertising
Enhancing inter-company communication
For Electronic Commerce
For business to business interaction - EDI
Forming strategic partnerships and supply chains
Reducing trading/operating costs

Examples of New Uses for Internet Technology
§ See ‘Changes in Information Systems’ reference for an
insight into how business and information systems
requirements are changing.
§ See ‘Growth of Knowledge Management’ reference for
ideas on possible business and information systems
requirements in the future.
§ See ‘Example – Internet and Knowledge Management’
reference for a practical example of using internet
technology in this context.
§ See ‘Smart Organisations’ reference for possibilities of
new organisational forms.
Business Modelling for Internet Based Technology
Summary
§ At the end of the self study session you should have a
better awareness of the following areas:
The origins of the internet and related technologies.
The rate at which internet use is increasing
The range of new infrastructures and technologies which
support internet based systems development.
The increasing potential of Internet Technology (internet
based systems) both within organisations and between
organisations and their environments.
We will explore these areas further in the research topic
studies and when using the case study – especially the
potential for business use and future uses.
