What is “copyright?”

A copyright gives the author certain exclusive
rights to their work for a limited time.
7/21/2015
What are some of these rights ?



The right to make copies of their work.
The right to distribute copies of their work.
The right to display their copyrighted work
publicly.

What are some reasons for
copyright laws?


If people can make money from their
copyrighted work, it is likely that more work
will be created.
Copyright laws give control of how a work
is used to the author of that work.

What are some copyright laws
students need to know?


Even if it doesn’t have a copyright notice, it
is probably copyright protected.
If you use settings or characters from
somebody else's story, you need that
author's permission.

What does “fair use” mean?

You can copy parts of a work without
permission when you do things like
comment on the work, teach about it, or
study it.

When should students cite
references?

Whenever you study someone else’s work
to help you write, communicate, or make
your own piece of work, you should cite
the other person’s work as a reference.

How should students cite
references?



There are many ways.
The A.P.A. format is widely accepted.
A.P.A. example:
– Arkin, Alan. (1976). The Lemming
Condition. San Francisco: Harper & Row.

What is a “creative work?”




It is something uniquely created by the
author, photographer, designer, etc.
It is not just a listing of facts.
It has to be in some tangible form like written
on paper, recorded on tape, or photographed
on film.
It can include creative editing or collecting of
others’ work in a unique way.

about citing references?
