Genetic Disorders
A biology group project
Timeline
October 20th – Groups decide on their specific
genetic disorder
 October 21st – Groups are provided with project
guide and specifics. One half of class period is
allowed for research in the media center
 October 22nd – Groups will be provided with
class time to organize, practice and finalize their
projects
 October 23rd – Filming will commence! DO NOT
BE ABSENT!

Purpose and Product
The purpose of this project is to promote
understanding of genetics and specifically
what happens when something goes awry
during the formation of new DNA or
individuals.
 The product is a public service
announcement (that will be filmed) to
inform the general public about the
specifics of the disorder.

Stage One
Research
October 21st
Use the following questions to help
guide your research (YES write
them
down)
Medical

1. How does a person inherit it? Is it dominant or
recessive?
2. What are the possible genotypes of the parents? If
the disease is a chromosomal abnormality, describe the
abnormality.
3. How prevalent is the disease in the population
(include statistics)?
4. What are the chances of a person with this disease
passing the disease to their offspring (include possible
scenarios)?
5. How is the disease diagnosed?
6. What are the physical symptoms of the disease?
7. What is the life expectancy of someone with the
disease?
8. How can the disease be treated?
Questions Continued
Personal
 1. What is everyday life like? What is the
quality of life?
2. What limitations does the person have?
3. What are some organizations that can
help a family cope with a child's disorder
(web links)
4. How possible is it that a cure will be
found?

Trust your sources
.com = commercial site trying to sell you
something (be careful)
 .org = organization, can be very useful if
not bias
 .gov = usually a solid source
 Scientific articles are a sure bet
 Popular media; you should be careful and
verify the information

DO NOT USE……

Sites that are exploiting people or the
disorder to sell a product

Sites that allow anyone to edit or post
information like….


Printing
Only print pages when absolutely
necessary!
 DO NOT print large articles, cut and paste
into a word document! (be sure to keep
track of sources)

Stage Two
Compile and Create
October 22nd
Do NOT plagiarize!
Reading from a printed article will not be
accepted and will result in disciplinary
action for plagiarism.
 You must create a script for your
commercial that is in your OWN WORDS!

Content
Make sure all aspects (questions) are
covered in your script.
 You are responsible for the validity of all
the information your group presents.
 Most importantly, be creative and
respectful and have fun.

Stage Three
Filming
October 23rd
Be Present!

Do not let your group down! If you are
absent with an unexcused absence
(documentation required) or you have not
talked to me previously about an absence
then you may receive a zero for this
project. (NO MAKE-UP or alternative
assignments will be given).
Be Quiet
Part of your individual grade will be how
well you conduct yourself in an audience.
 That means if you are making excessive
noise or talking during filming you will be
asked to leave and will receive a zero.

Be Professional
Mistakes will be made, that’s not a big
deal. We can do a retake if needed.
 However laughing uncontrollably or acting
immature or unprofessional on filming day
is unacceptable.

Grading
Grading

You will receive two grades for this project
– Individual grade determined by your peers!
– Group grade determined by me!
Individual evaluation
Participation: Student provided input into the
project and remained on task throughout,
assisted other group members.
 Contributions: Student contributed valuable
information to the group, and provided a fair
share of the research information
 Cooperation: Student gave and requested
information from other members regarding the
project's final layout and presentation.

